The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) launched the 2nd group of its flagship NNSA Minority Serving Institution Intern Program (MSIIP) and is currently accepting applications for full-time and part-time internships beginning June 2024.

MSIIP is designed to promote the education and development of the next generation of scientists and other professionals to meet current and future mission needs of the NNSA by providing an enhanced training environment that exposes participants to challenges unique to the NNSA mission.

The program kicks off with an orientation in Washington, DC to introduce the interns to the nuclear security enterprise and to learn more about the internship opportunity overall.

The group that started this year included 96 students (6 Associate degree candidates, 67 Bachelor’s, 13 Master’s, and 10 PhD) from different walks of life and cultures. The interns represented 50 minority serving institutions from various educational majors, ranging from law to computer science to community health.

As program participants, interns will develop the experience needed to "jump-start" their careers and explore future opportunities within the federal government. Interns will be mentored by leading scientists, engineers, and other top professionals to develop their skills and enhance leadership capabilities.

The MSIIP application is currently open for the next class of interns with a deadline of October 22, 2023.

Internship benefits include weekly stipends and summer supplements to offset the cost of housing, local transportation, and remote participation; inbound/outbound transportation reimbursement; travel and training allowances; and participation in professional development activities.
