The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Electricity (OE) today announced the permanent appointment of Gilbert (Gil) Bindewald III as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, elevating him from acting status. The appointment is effective immediately.

WASHINGTON D.C. —The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Electricity (OE) today announced the permanent appointment of Gilbert (Gil) Bindewald III as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, elevating him from acting status. The appointment is effective immediately.
“Gil is a tested and proven leader who embraces the Office of Electricity’s vital mission of ensuring the reliability, resilience, security, and affordability of the nation’s power grid for the American people,” said Gene Rodrigues, Assistant Secretary for Electricity. “While serving in an acting capacity, Gil consistently demonstrated his ability to work in productive partnership with internal and external stakeholders to advance the development of a 21st century American power grid. I look forward to working side-by-side with Gil in the years to come to enable the reliable delivery of clean, abundant, and affordable energy to every American home and business.”
Bindewald’s responsibilities include oversight of the Department's long-term strategic and foundational R&D efforts necessary to modernize our nation’s electricity delivery system.
“My DOE colleagues have shaped who I am and helped me to amplify the beneficial impact of the amazing work that we do in the Office of Electricity,” said Bindewald. “I am honored to serve in this role permanently to continue leading our transformative efforts with our industry partners to strengthen and modernize our nation’s electrical grid.”
Bindewald joined DOE more than 20 years ago and has filled numerous leadership roles, including directing strategic and foundational research and development efforts to improve grid resilience and reliability. He is also co-chair of DOE’s Grid Modernization Initiative and has lent his expertise to several broader departmental efforts to advance innovative clean energy technologies and improve coordination and communication on the topic of the grid. Bindewald holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Union College and a Master of Public Administration in International Development from Harvard University.
