Department of Energy Awards $1 Million for Seven Projects to Accelerate the Adoption of Smart Manufacturing Processes and Technologies

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), today announced the selection of seven projects that will advance smart manufacturing technologies and processes to increase productivity, save energy, and boost industrial competitiveness.

Smart manufacturing technologies—including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics—increase integration and automation to help American manufacturers optimize their use of energy and materials.

These selected projects will identify new applications of existing smart manufacturing technologies. Projects will also demonstrate energy productivity and/or operational efficiencies of smart manufacturing technologies within energy-intensive industries, including cement, chemicals, food, and steel.

Selected projects will work to address priorities identified in the CESMII Roadmap.

Founded in 2016, CESMII accelerates smart manufacturing adoption through the integration of advanced sensors, data analytics, platforms, and controls. CESMII is a Manufacturing USA™ Institute funded by DOE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office. The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) is the program and administrative home of CESMII.
