WASHINGTON – The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration announced today that it has awarded a contract extension to Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC for the management and operation of the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) and Pantex Plant (Pantex). The extension period is up to five years for the Y-12 National Security Complex and up to three years for the Pantex Plant.
This contract extension is the most advantageous method of ensuring NNSA’s critical mission work is not impacted. The extension also provides stability and continuity for the workforce at the two sites.
In May 2022, NNSA announced that the consolidated M&O contract approach was no longer suitable for meeting increasing mission requirements at Pantex and Y-12 and therefore NNSA would pursue two separate, sequential M&O contract competitions. NNSA will begin acquisition planning for the Pantex and Y-12 in Fiscal Years 2023 and 2024, respectively. This extension will allow NNSA sufficient time to facilitate a full and open competition and an orderly transition for both sites.
The Y‑12 National Security Complex manufactures components for the nation’s nuclear weapons deterrent, retrieves and stores nuclear materials, fuels the nation’s naval reactors, and performs work for other government and private-sector entities.
The Pantex Plant, located northeast of Amarillo, Texas, is the nation’s only facility for the final assembly, dismantlement, and maintenance of nuclear weapons. All work at NPO sites is carried out under three overarching priorities: the safety and health of workers and the public, the security of weapons and information, and the protection of the environment.
