The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy’s Fuel Economy Guide shows the range in estimated annual fuel cost for each light-duty vehicle class. Even within the same vehicle class, the annual fuel costs can vary widely depending on vehicle technologies and fuel types. The vehicle classes that include electric models typically have lower minimum annual fuel costs than those without electric models. The minivan class has the smallest range in estimated annual fuel cost with a difference of only $1,800 between the minimum and maximum for the models in that class. The differences in fuel cost of the models offered illustrates the importance of consumers choosing the most fuel-efficient vehicle that will meet their needs.
Note: Assumes 15,000 miles of travel each year, 55% of driving in the city and 45% on the highway, and fuel costs $4.18/gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, $4.94/gallon for premium, $5.51/gallon for diesel, and $0.13/kWh for electricity.
