Women in Infrastructure Series: Anika Khanna

The National Nuclear Security Administration is celebrating the women who make up the backbone of our Enterprise. These women work across areas like project management, maintenance, disposition, sustainability and more. Their contributions and accomplishments are what make our workforce so incredible, and their backgrounds and expertise ensure that workforce is just as vibrant and important as the missions they support.

How did you become interested in infrastructure or what was your career path to this point?

Prior to working in infrastructure, my background was in occupational safety and quality control.  When I joined NNSA, I provided headquarters safety oversight to the ES&H programs. When I visited NNSA’s sites, I was impressed by the dedication of the individuals who worked there despite the working conditions, as much of NNSA’s infrastructure is from the 1960’s and in need of repair and modernization. When the Office of Safety, Infrastructure, and Operations was stood up, I seized the opportunity to work in the infrastructure arena and there has been no looking back.

Describe a proud moment or accomplishment.

A proud moment was when I became the program manager of the Operations of Facilities and Maintenance and Repair programs. These programs total approximately $1.6B dollars and are vital to sustaining NNSA’s infrastructure, and providing a safe and reliable environment to be able to meet the mission.

Why do you like working for NNSA?

NNSA is very forward leaning, in particular the Office of Safety, Infrastructure, and Operations. We are a very data-driven organization and use innovative tools for decision making. This drives consistency and allows us to be open and transparent with our stakeholders. Additionally, NNSA provides great flexibility and work life balance, and senior leadership embrace new ideas and change.

Any advice?

Go for it! Working in infrastructure is exciting in today’s times. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to see the skyline change at so many of our sites as we construct new buildings that are sustainable and will stand the test of time.
