Ministerials Will Focus on Implementation Efforts to Achieve COP26 Commitments
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND — The U.S. Department of Energy today announced Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as the host city for the 2022 Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and the ministerial for Mission Innovation (MI). The announcement was made at the United Nations Conference of Parties (COP26) by U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. She was joined by Chile’s Energy Minister Juan Carlos Jobet, host of the 2021 joint ministerials, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, who celebrated the announcement, and Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. The combined ministerials leverage collective action in the public and private sector to rapidly accelerate clean energy innovation and deployment around the world.
“The U.S. is proud to host the 2022 Clean Energy Ministerial and ministerial for Mission Innovation in the Steel City of Pittsburgh, PA, a town that exemplifies how a legacy energy and industrial-dependent economy can be transformed into a technology and innovation powerhouse,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “The joint CEM/MI ministerial meetings represent an opportunity to lock in climate commitments through big bets on innovation that empower an energy transition by 2050—averting the worst effects of climate change and supercharging economic opportunities for the global workforce.”

Hosting CEM and MI reinforces the return of the United States leadership and commitment to international collaboration on clean energy deployment and innovation. The meeting will also highlight the gains made in implementing ambitious climate policies, while accelerating the research, design, and deployment of clean energy and carbon negative technologies. Together, the ministerial meetings represent an opportunity to enhance climate commitments through big bets on innovation that empower a net zero energy transition by 2050—aiming to avert the worst effects of climate change and provides new economic opportunities for workers at home and abroad.
CEM and MI together consist of 31 countries that work closely with the private sector, industry, research institutions, finance institutions, and philanthropic organizations to drive deployment and innovation of energy efficiency and clean energy, including renewables, nuclear, and abated fossil energy. The organizations also work on labor transition issues to ensure that the creation of the net-zero economy leaves no community behind.
DOE helped launch CEM in 2010, gathering ministers from the world’s major economies to collaborate on accelerating clean energy adoption through enabling policy frameworks. The United States co-leads numerous CEM work streams with a goal of rapidly accelerating global deployment of clean energy technologies ranging from electric vehicles to carbon capture, utilization and storage, and hydrogen to biofuels.
MI, launched alongside the Paris Agreement in 2015, gathers governments, public authorities, industry, investors and academia to accelerate the production of widely affordable clean energy through “research missions” to limit the increase of global temperatures to 1.5 to 2.0 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The United States co-leads three MI Missions, including the Net-Zero Shipping and Clean Hydrogen Missions, and a third Mission on Carbon Dioxide Removal that the United States launched today with Saudi Arabia and Canada at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).
The joint CEM and MI meeting in Pittsburgh will be held September 22-23, 2022.
