How LPO Can Support the Long Duration Storage Earth Shot

The Department of Energy today continued its Energy EarthShot series with the start of the Long Duration Storage Shot Summit, which is focused on mapping out strategies to reducing the cost of long duration energy storage by 90% within the decade as part of the Biden Administration’s goal of 100% clean electricity by 2035. Summit attendees will include high-level government officials, industry and university representatives, regional and community leaders, and DOE national laboratories, all sharing perspectives on accelerating breakthrough technologies to store clean electricity, making it available anytime and anywhere.

Commercial-scale energy storage projects are key to accelerating the deployment of other clean energy generation sources. Those projects that utilize innovative technology and avoid, reduce, or sequester greenhouse gas emissions, as well as meeting all other program criteria, may be eligible for loan guarantees under the LPO’s Title 17 Innovative Energy Loan Guarantee Program.  Any variation of long duration storage technology may potentially be eligible, including electrochemical, mechanical, thermal, chemical carriers, or any combination of those technologies. Potential projects may include technologies such as, but are not limited to:

• Compressed air energy storage
• Hydrogen production and storage
• Pumped storage hydropower
• Newer battery chemistries and flow batteries  
• Thermal energy storage
• Electric vehicle bidirectional storage
