Wayne Jones, NNSA's Associate Administrator for Information Management and Chief Information Officer
After more than 30 years of distinguished public service, NNSA’s Associate Administrator for Information Management and Chief Information Officer, Wayne Jones, is retiring Jan. 30.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to provide leadership and oversight of NNSA’s critical information technology and cybersecurity program,” said Jones. “I have been fortunate to have worked with many fantastic individuals in the public sector and it is my hope that I have set this organization on a path to success for many years to come.”
Following his service with the United States Navy, Jones went on to assume various leadership roles in government. He entered the Federal Civil Service in 2002 as a Department of Defense Information Technology Manager and served as the Chief Technology Officer for the Missile Defense Agency prior to his most recent role with NNSA.
Jones’ career with NNSA began in 2006 as an IT and Cyber manager. For 14 years, he provided outstanding leadership and oversight of NNSA’s IT and cybersecurity programs, including the oversight of key initiatives like the establishment of the Information Assurance Response Center (IARC), which is now designated as NNSA’s Enterprise Security Operations Center. The IARC continues to provide a real-time composite view of the enterprise cybersecurity posture and assists with the prevention, detection, analysis, and mitigation of cybersecurity incidents for the Department of Energy (DOE) classified computing environment and select unclassified mission networks. Additionally, his office provided infrastructure and protection for nearly all of DOE’s classified networks.
In 2013, the Defense Information Systems Agency Field Security Operations and the Defense-wide Information Assurance Program certified his office as a Cybersecurity Service Provider and awarded it exemplary markings in the areas of Computer Network Defense Protection, Detection, Response, and Sustainment. In 2017, Jones oversaw the development of the NNSA Center of Excellence for Cyber Intelligence which continues to operate out of Sandia National Laboratories. Throughout his tenure, Jones’ office also solidified a number of interagency and foreign partnerships and projects which increase data sharing capabilities that lend to the mitigation of nuclear threats, both at home and abroad.

“Wayne has provided phenomenal leadership and was an excellent public servant for the Department and NNSA,” said Dr. Charles P. Verdon, Acting Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and NNSA Administrator, and Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs. “We are grateful for his commitment to NNSA’s critical national security mission and wish him well in his retirement.”
Jones has compiled an exemplary record of dedicated service and received congratulations and accolades for his contributions to NNSA’s missions and security goals. In his farewell message to staff, Jones noted that the protection against emerging threats and the security of NNSA data must continue to be a top priority.
“Now more than ever, we must develop practices to support the mission with modern technologies in a safe and secure manner,” said Jones. “As I reflect back on my years of public service and prepare to embark on a new chapter, I want to wish you all the best and express my sincere thanks for your continued dedication to NNSA’s mission and our Nation.”
