California Maritime Academy 2020

Team Name:

Cal Maritime

California State University Maritime Academy, Vallejo, California

Why this Competition?

Cal Maritime has participated in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Collegiate Wind Competition (CWC) since its inception in 2014.

The team comprises students from five different majors who are drawn to the CWC because of their passion for sustainability, the prestige of the competition, and their desire to work in the renewable energy industry after graduation. This competition lays the foundation for skills, knowledge, possible internships, and industry connections.

Another factor contributing to the team’s interest in CWC is California’s statewide mandate for 100% renewable energy by 2045.

Project Description

The team identified a region in Eastern Colorado where they are developing a comprehensive wind farm siting plan, as well as economic and environmental plans. The team will develop a turbine with a variable pitch design and a custom-built generator, which is a first for Cal Maritime.

Game Plan

The team is divided into four subteams: engineering, siting, policy, and business. The engineering team is further subdivided into aerodynamic, electrical, generator, and mechanical teams.

The team meets as a whole periodically, and each subteam meets regularly to develop their individual deliverables. Although each team has their own responsibilities, clear lines of communication will be established to ensure success.

Team Strengths

As a small campus, California State University Maritime Academy fosters cohesion among students. Many of the team members already know each other or have worked together on previous projects or classwork. Cal Maritime takes a hands-on and practical approach to education, and the school has participated in the CWC for seven years.

Team Hurdles

The team is facing challenges this year, such as conflicting schedules, as students come from five different majors. Most participants are seniors and carry heavy course loads. California State University Maritime Academy is also still recovering from damage and campus closures after a fire last semester.

Competition Objectives

The team’s overarching objective for participation in the CWC is to have fun while working to foster better presentation skills, build greater industry networks, and apply advanced problem-solving in new areas of study. The competition functions as a bridge between the classroom and real-world experience that enables students to focus on cutting-edge technology and application.
