Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency, Alex Fitzsimmons, joins Director of EERE's FEMP, Robert Ivester, in recognizing federal teams for their contributions at the 2019 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards on October 29, 2019.
The federal government is the nation’s largest energy consumer, with more than 350,000 facilities and 600,000 vehicles across the country and around the world. On October 29, I had the opportunity to recognize 28 individuals and teams across the federal government for their contributions in achieving significant energy and water cost savings for their agencies at the 2019 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards.
Managed by our Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE)'s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), these annual awards honor federal personnel for their outstanding achievements related to energy and water cost savings, optimized energy and water use, and energy resilience solutions to advance agency missions. Many of the winning projects include on-site renewable energy, energy storage, and combined heat and power technologies – a reflection of the growing importance of energy integration and resilience, which are top DOE priorities.
This Administration is committed to helping agencies achieve their vital economic and national security missions through innovative energy technologies that reduce costs and enhance resilience. Within EERE, one area of focus is on the nexus of efficiency and resilience. In the FEMP context, this means working with federal agencies to examine the needs of their critical infrastructure and develop solutions. Many of the solutions developed by the winning teams are focused on improving operational efficiencies, energy security, and resilience of federal facilities, campuses, and surrounding regions through the installation and integration of distributed energy (such as solar PV), microgrids, and combined heat and power systems, to name a few.
Simply put, the 2019 Federal Energy and Water Management Award winners will help federal agencies achieve their missions. These successes are only possible because of the dedication and commitment of the federal civilian and armed services workforce to make the federal government as efficient and resilient as possible. Again, I am proud to recognize the federal personnel and their project partners from the private sector and our National Labs for their tremendous work in FY 2018 to strengthen America’s energy security – and I look forward to seeing what new and exciting projects come next.
