AMO’s HPC4Mfg Program Appoints New Interim Director
AMO and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) announced the appointment of Robin Miles as the interim director for the High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) Program, effective August 6, 2018. Prior to her new role, Robin served as the Deputy Division Leader within the LLNL Engineering directorate and the project manager for the HPC4Mfg and High Performance Computing for Materials programs.

NEW TOOL: AMO Fan System Assessment Tool
The Fan System Assessment Tool (FSAT) has been added to the AMO integrated tool suite, which aids manufacturers in improving the efficiency of energy systems and equipment within a plant. FSAT helps users identify and evaluate the potential energy savings opportunities in fan systems. This tool enables industrial users to assess various system modifications to determine optimal system configurations and test customized operating scenarios to minimize energy consumption.

AMO Releases Updated Combined Heat and Power Installation Database
AMO recently announced the release of the updated Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Installation Database, which is a comprehensive listing of CHP installations throughout the United States. This year’s update includes data on CHP systems in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands through December 31, 2017.

IACMI Announces Collaborative Project to Innovate Smart Composite Pressure Vessels in Manufacturing
AMO’s Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) recently announced a project to develop Smart Composite Pressure Vessels (SCPV) with integrated health monitoring. The project is a technical collaboration between IACMI, Steelhead Composites, Teijin Carbon, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the University of Tennessee. The goal is to develop structurally predictable, low-cost SCPVs without compromising safety by employing integrated, reliable health-monitoring.

AMO’s Sudarsan Rachuri Bestowed Highest Honor in Research Excellence by ASME
Dr. Sudarsan Rachuri, AMO technology manager, was recently honored with the Excellence in Research Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Computers and Information in Engineering Division in recognition of his contributions in the area of smart manufacturing.

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION: Expanding the Scope of NREL’s National Wind Technology Center
The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE) Wind Energy Technologies Office issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gain input regarding infrastructure or equipment investments that would enable expanded energy research and development opportunities at the National Wind Technology Center. The vision of this EERE-wide initiative is to enable the facility to transition from its focus on wind to a broader mix of energy research and development opportunities, including energy storage and grid integration. Specific areas of interest include hydrogen fuel cells, advanced manufacturing, solar, grid integration and storage, marine hydrokinetic, hydropower, geothermal, and hybrid energy technologies.
