Funding Available for Small Business Innovation Research and Technology Transfer

U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry issued the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) second Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs for Fiscal Year 2018. The Phase I Release 2 FOA, with approximately $16 million in available funding, will provide funding for innovations that address multiple research and development programs throughout DOE, including the Advanced Manufacturing Office.

IACMI 2018 Summer Internship Applications Open

Are you interested in a cutting-edge manufacturing technologies internship? AMO’s Institute for Advanced Composite Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) Internship Program offers undergraduate and graduate students a chance to participate in a research experience with an assigned mentor at one of IACMI’s partner sites. The experience provides a maximum of 400 hours of participation either in a 10 week short-term appointment or a long-term appointment spanning the course of one year.

AMO’s Sudarsan Rachuri Selected as an AAAS Fellow

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has awarded the distinction of Fellow to 396 of its members for 2017 in recognition of their contributions to science and technology, scientific leadership and extraordinary achievements across disciplines. AMO is pleased to announce that Sudarsan Rachuri was among the selected recipients in the section on engineering.

AMO’s HPC4Mfg Program Accepts Innovation Excellence Award

An HPC4Manufacturing project aimed at saving time and money for paper product manufacturers earned an HPC Innovation Excellence Award at the 2017 SuperComputing Conference.

The project, led by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researcher Will Elmer, was a collaboration with consumer goods manufacturer Procter & Gamble and required the development of a parallel program called p-fiber, capable of quickly preparing the fiber geometry and meshing input needed to model thousands of paper fibers at once.

AMO Celebrates Anniversary of Hamilton’s ‘Report on the Subject of Manufacturers’

On December 5, 1791, Alexander Hamilton delivered his Report on the Subject of Manufacturesto Congress. In his report, Hamilton urged economic freedom by placing a great emphasize on the need to advance the manufacturing sector. Although technologies have drastically evolved in the last 226 years, these words still stand true and continue to be relevant to today’s manufacturing sector.
