The DOE Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program offices recently released its FY 2018 Phase 1 Release 2 topics. This solicitation includes a new topic on Atomically Precise Manufacturing that is focused on molecular machines.

DEADLINE: PowerAmerica Call for Project Concept Paper – Nov 10

Concept papers for PowerAmerica’s Call for Projects are due Friday, November 10. PowerAmerica is seeking projects to accelerate the adoption of SiC and GaN power electronics technologies.

AMO’s RAPID Institute Announces First Project Selections

The Advanced Manufacturing Office’s Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) Institute announced the first-round of public-private partnership projects selected for negotiation. Out of more than 70 submitted proposals, the national consortium chose 21 projects to tackle manufacturing challenges. The selected projects range in duration from 15 months to 4 years and receive funding of approximately $30 million including cost share. RAPID plans a second project solicitation in the spring of 2018.

PowerAmerica’s Quest to Make Silicon-Carbide Power Electronics Succeed

Researchers at the Advanced Manufacturing Office’s PowerAmerica Institute, led by Jay Baliga, Professor at North Carolina State University, are on a mission to reduce the price of silicon carbine (SiC) to 1.5 times the cost of silicon. The project chose X-Fab in Lubbock, Texas, which has a line dedicated to silicon carbide production.
