Applications for the second cohort of Innovation Crossroads (IC), a two-year post-doctoral research program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), are due Monday, October 30, 2017.
IC embeds the next generation of top technical postdoctoral talent within ORNL as entrepreneurial researchers to address fundamental energy and manufacturing challenges identified by industry.

NOTICE OF INTENT to Issue a Funding Opportunity for High Performance Computing for Manufacturing Program
The High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) in the Energy Department’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) announced their intent to issue their fifth solicitation in January 2018 to fund projects that allow manufacturers to use high-performance computing resources at the Department of Energy’s national laboratories to tackle major manufacturing challenges. HPC4Mfg is led by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and National Renewable Energy Laboratory as strong partners
Selected projects will be awarded up to $300,000 to support compute cycles and work performed by the national lab partners. Project durations are for one year. HPC4Mfg anticipates making multiple awards, subject to the availability of funding. All DOE laboratories are eligible to participate in this program.

Celebrate National Manufacturing Day with AMO’s Manufacturing USA Institutes
In celebration of Manufacturing Day, LIFT – Lightweight Innovations For Tomorrow and IACMI – The Composites Institute will unveil the new state-of-the-art Lightweighting research and development laboratory in Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood. The celebration will mark the innovation hub as officially open– exactly one year after the institutes announced a $50 million investment into the facility. This hub will further our respective missions related to investing in and supporting the U.S. manufacturing base.

AMO’s Better Plants Program Releases Its Annual 2017 Progress Report
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings, Better Plants Program and Challenge helps secure American innovation and manufacturing competitiveness. Across the country, 190 Better Plants partners committed to reducing energy costs to strengthen their productivity, create jobs, and increase their resiliency. Partners how represent roughly 12 percent of the U.S. manufacturing energy footprint and have reported estimated cumulative energy cost savings of $4.2 billion over the last seven years.

SunShot Initiative Launches Solar Desalination Effort
The SunShot initiative announced $15 million in new funding for technologies that advance solar desalination technologies. The Solar Desalination funding program will develop novel technologies or concepts that use solar thermal energy to create freshwater from otherwise unusable waters. Thermal desalination is a potential solution to increase water supplies for municipal water and agriculture, and is an important technology to purify water produced from various industrial processes, including oil and gas production. Advancing state-of-the-art thermal technologies and energy-efficient desalination systems will reduce the levelized cost of water by reducing the levelized cost of heat, resulting in more efficient thermal desalination processes and lower overall capital and integration costs for solar thermal desalination. SunShot expects to make 7-10 awards for a total of $15 million. Mandatory concept papers are due on December 4. Learn more.
