DOE entered into a Consent Decree with Haier America Trading, L.L.C., after DOE testing in the Energy Star Verification Testing Pilot Program showed Haier's freezer model HUF138EA, not only failed to satisfy the ENERGY STAR specification, but also failed to meet the applicable federal energy conservation standards. Haier found that the product's noncompliance was due to a malformed part, ceased distribution of the product, and began repairs (and issuing repair instructions to its product service centers). Haier voluntarily disclosed that three additional models exhibited the same defect.
Haier agreed to attempt to contact customers who may hold the defective product, to repair affected models at no cost, to extend warranties on the product, and will pay $150,000 to the U.S. Treasury.
