Connect with science, technology, chemistry, engineering, ecology, and art during four, fun-filled days of exploration.
St. Charles, MO – What will inspire our next generation of scientists, artists, engineers, and biologists? What will fuel their curiosity to create, solve problems, and study? The Weldon Spring Site’s Science and Nature Adventure will challenge, inspire, and fuel children’s curiosities to be great thinkers, problem solvers, and nature lovers.
The Weldon Spring Site invites children and their guests to attend an upcoming program series called Science and Nature Adventure. A daily theme will be repeated in sessions held each morning and afternoon during the program series.
Tuesday, June 7 Theme: Science, Engineering, and Chemistry Investigations – Conduct experiments, build structures, make observations, record data, and test ideas. Participants will experiment with states of matter, renewable energy, and more.
Wednesday, June 8 Theme: Water Is Everything – Water is simple, yet so amazing. Explore the physical, chemical, and natural world of water through games and hands-on experiments. Water is important to us at the Weldon Spring Site. Our staff studies over 100 groundwater monitoring wells and several springs to ensure no residual contamination from WWII and Cold War operations impacts human health or the environment.
Thursday, June 9 Theme: Ecology Exploration – In their simplest form, habitats are home to wildlife. But more than that, nature provides clean drinking water, clean air, and wild places to recharge our spirits. Participants will go on a nature scavenger hunt, collect native seeds for planting, and create nature crafts. Explore the restored Howell Prairie and the wildlife that call it home.
Friday, June 10 Theme: Prairie Art – Discover the colors, textures, and beauty of the Howell Prairie through acrylic painting, clay sculpting, and natural dye. Native vegetation was seeded in the prairie between 2002 and 2004, at completion of the site’s environmental cleanup. Restoring prairies in Missouri is crucial; only 1 percent remains from historic acreage. Today the prairie is home to colorful flowers, fascinating insects, and vibrant birds.
Attendees can sign up for one or several sessions of their choosing. Program sessions are free and open to all. Morning sessions will run between 9:00 a.m. and noon. Afternoon sessions will run between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required and children must be accompanied by adults.
