From July 26-30, the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) hosted Future of Manufacturing Week. This weeklong campaign highlighted the Department of Energy’s (DOE) recent investments in the development and deployment of clean-energy technologies needed to ensure a resilient manufacturing sector and decarbonize energy-intensive industries throughout the economy.
Through a series of new initiatives and a virtual roundtable event hosted by Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm, DOE called on its partners across the public and private sectors to help build a manufacturing sector that supports the Biden Administration’s decarbonization goals and benefits all Americans.
Highlights from the Future of Manufacturing Week include:
Roundtable on the Future of Manufacturing with Secretary Granholm
On Thursday, July 29, Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm hosted a virtual roundtable event to discuss DOE’s efforts to decarbonize America’s manufacturing sector, manufacture clean-energy technologies, and pave the way to a resilient, carbon-neutral economy by 2050.
The roundtable included Representative Haley Stevens; Jane Flegal, Senior Director for Industrial Emissions at the White House Council on Environmental Quality; Leon Topalian, Chairman of American Iron and Steel Institute and Nucor Chief Executive Officer; John Dyck, Chief Executive Officer of CESMII – The Smart Manufacturing Institute; Mike Clemmer, Director of Corporate & Manufacturing Facilities & Environmental at Nissan North America; and Charlie Manzione, Senior Manager of Safety Environmental & Metal Finishing at KYB Americas.
$60 Million Investment in Industrial Assessment Program
DOE announced $60 million in funding for its largest-ever cohort of university-based Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs), which assist small- and medium-sized manufacturers in reducing their carbon emissions and lowering energy costs, while training the next generation of energy-efficiency workers.

Seeking Input for a New Clean Energy Manufacturing Institute

DOE announced a request for information (RFI) to inform the creation of a new Clean Energy Manufacturing Institute. This RFI is specifically focused on aspects of industrial decarbonization associated with electrification and/or metals manufacturing.
$42.3 Million in Research and Development to Strengthen the Manufacturing Sector and Accelerate Economy-Wide Decarbonization
DOE announced up to $42.3 million in funding to catalyze clean energy technologies for a strong, resilient manufacturing future.

Industry Partners to Validate Innovative Manufacturing Technologies

DOE selected five private-sector partners to conduct field validation of clean, efficient technologies in real-world industrial environments. These Industrial Technology Validation (ITV) projects will accelerate the adoption of cost-effective, emerging technologies that can help decarbonize the industrial sector.
The ITV Pilot also issued a Request for Proposals seeking additional technologies that can cost-effectively transform the operational efficiency of American industry.
$5 Million in Desalination Technology to Deliver Freshwater to Communities Across America
AMO and National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI) announced $5 million in federal funding to develop desalination technologies that will help bring freshwater supplies to communities across the nation.

AMO announced a new lab call with up to $15.8 million in funding to support technical assistance programs for the adoption and implementation of highly efficient combined heat and power technologies and to develop a manufacturing-focused education and workforce development roadmap.
